Simple DIY Hair Conditioner With Argan Oil (Natural Recipe)

Making your own conditioner can save you a lot of money! I am a huge fan of creating my own homemade clean masks, shampoos, and conditioners because I can reduce my exposure to toxic chemicals, save money, and also embrace my Moroccan beauty rituals! I love using argan oil in just about everything, especially hair care.

For this homemade natural conditioner, I’ll be using simple ingredients.

In general, a basic conditioner mix contains water, an oil of your choice (I’ll be using argan oil, but I’ll provide other options that are beneficial for hair), and an emulsifier.

The Best Oils For DIY Natural Conditioner

Growing up in Morocco, we use Argan oil as a base for almost any skin or hair care product for its amazing benefits.

However, you can use any other oil you have like:

Jojoba Oil helps moisturize the hair and scalp and is also great for hair growth.

Rosehip Oil is another option for infusing your conditioner with antioxidants to repair hair damage. So, if you need some added care for your hair, I suggest you add this oil.

Coconut oil or almond oil are also very moisturizing and help reduce breakage and add shine, so these can be easy to add in as well.

Adding Your Emulsifier

For this natural conditioner, I try to keep things as simple and natural as possible. We want to make sure the water and oil ingredients are mixed in well and avoid separation. So we need some kind of emulsifier to create a smooth and stable mixture that can last.

I prefer to use raw honey as it contains natural emulsifying properties. You can use Aloe Vera gel which I use for the homemade shampoo recipe, lecithin (natural).

Emulsifier Wax

You can use an emulsifier wax for this conditioner, which is plant-derived.

Another option for emulsifiers is Behentrimonium Methosulfate (BTMS), which you can purchase and use for home care products. It is considered ‘naturally derived,’ and it helps to detangle hair without adding any build-up to the hair (1).

How to Make Natural Conditioner with Argan Oil

To make this DIY hair Conditioner with argan oil, here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup distilled water
  • 2 tablespoons emulsifying wax
  • 2 tsp argan oil (jojoba or coconut)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 10-15 drops essential oil (optional, I love adding rosemary oil)

How to Make The Argan Oil Conditioner

  • Fill a saucepan with water and place over medium heat until the water is hot.
  • Place a bowl that’s heat-safe on the saucepan to create a double boiler.
  • Now, add the emulsifying wax to the heatproof bowl and stir until it fully melts.
  • Once the emulsifying wax has melted, add your oils and mix well.
  • Slowly add the water and honey into the bowl and stir until everything is combined.
  • Remove the bowl from the heat and add your essential oils.

Once the conditioner has cooled down, you can transfer it to a bottle and let it rest. it will thicken and become more creamy.

I prefer to make small batches since I don’t use preservatives in my homemade recipes. I usually store this in the fridge and use it throughout the next couple of weeks.

I use a generous amount after using my argan oil homemade shampoo (or a regular shampoo) and leave for a few minutes before washing.

If you give this recipe a try, leave me a comment. Homemade hair care routines are a great way to treat yourself at home and also give your hair the nutrients it needs without any added chemicals.
